5G ultra reliable communication for automotive and Industry 4.0

The profound digitization and the associated comprehensive networking of all devices (IoT) in the most diverse fields of application represent an innovation dynamic for all areas of life. Above all, the mobility and flexibility of the various areas of application call for a new powerful, reliable and safe wireless technology. The multitude of applications for all of us, Industry 4.0, Smart Cities, autonomous driving, eHealth, etc. are based on new 5G mobile technology.

In Austria, the research institute Austrian Institute of Technology AIT has established a comprehensive 5G research focus in recent years and has gained an international reputation in this field. Working closely with internationally renowned industrial and scientific partners from Austria, Europe and the US, AIT is creating a critical mass of technology competence in Austria to develop state-of-the-art 5G technologies and new applications. These include connected, autonomous vehicles and sensor networks for future digital factories , as well as intelligent indoor localisation solutions for modern robot controls. In the area of autonomous and networked vehicles, AIT is cooperating with Nokia and AVL to develop special 5G-based intelligent multiple-antenna systems to ensure reliable communication even at higher vehicle speeds.

  • Wireless communication links between machines demand fundamentally new communication system properties such as
  • low-latency,
  • defined error probability,
  • an interface to control algorithms and
  • the ability to operate in challenging environments.

These properties facilitate application in new markets, e.g. connected autonomous vehicles can exchange redundant sensor information (radar, optical, etc.) or industrial production systems gain more flexibility by replacing cable connections with wireless links. ultra-reliable wireless machine-to-machine communications

AIT offers research services and innovations in the following competence fields:

  • wireless channel measurements, characterization and real-time emulation
  • ultra-reliable low-latency wireless communications
  • indoor wireless positioning systems
  • real-time software defined radio algorithms
  • mobile communication solutions for flexible production lines in the production of the future (Industry 4.0)
  • intelligent multi-antenna systems and millimeter wave technologies for reliable vehicle communication
