5G – reliable and secure wireless technology for Industry 4.0 and automotive
Marketing and Communications Manager at AIT Austrian Institute of Technology
About
A multitude of applications for Industry 4.0, smart cities, autonomous driving, eHealth, and many more are based on new 5G mobile technology. The Austrian research centre AIT Austrian Institute of Technology has established a comprehensive 5G research focus and has gained an international reputation in this field. Working closely with internationally renowned industrial and scientific partners from all around the world, AIT is creating a critical mass of technology competence to develop state-of-the-art 5G technologies and new applications. These include connected, autonomous vehicles and sensor networks for future digital factories, as well as intelligent indoor localisation solutions for modern robot controls:
Future digital factories/Industry 4.0 : Dynamic reconfigurability of industrial production lines will be indispensable for new production processes in the future and will thus be a basis for Industry 4.0. Together with the company Siemens Austria, AIT is developing a very robust 5G radio technology for ultra-short latency times to enable highly accurate and reliable control of production machines and robots via radio. The UNWIRE project is carried out as part of the FFG programme ‘Produktion der Zukunft’ funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit).
Autonomous and networked vehicles : In the area of autonomous and networked vehicles, AIT is cooperating with the companies Nokia and AVL to develop special 5G-based multiple-antenna systems to ensure reliable communication even at higher vehicle speeds. The MARCONI project is carried out as part of the FFG programme ‘IKT der Zukunft’ funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit).
Indoor localisation solution : As part of AGENT, a European ‘eurostars’ project, AIT developed a radio-based indoor localisation solution together with the Austrian company indoo.rs GmbH and the German Heidelberg Mobil International GmbH. The solution enables accurate and reliable localisation of objects in buildings for a wide range of applications.
- mobile communication solutions for flexible production lines in the production of the future (Industry 4.0)
- intelligent multi-antenna systems and millimeter wave (mmWave) technologies for reliable vehicle communication
- wireless location systems for indoor use
