A software library for the intelligent compression of sensor-transmitted data – working like an MP3 for big data

With its flexible multi-platform software library, the Intelligent Data Reduction (IDR) software tool was designed for the intelligent compression of data transmitted by sensors to the most essential for the business process. It works like an MP3 for big data in the context of IoT and reduces the network load by about 90 percent during the transmission of big data. It will serve providers of integrated IoT solutions and companies from the industrial and municipal sectors who need to prepare their business for IoT-related challenges and have to use their bandwidth capacity efficiently.

• Users can easily configure parameters including the number of measurement values per interval and the threshold values to make an intelligent selection of the data to be analysed.
• IDR reduces data quantity consistently as long as the data transferred indicates that the underlying process is homogeneous. Data is recorded in shorter intervals when significant changes take place in rapid succession.
• The software tool is ideally suited for reducing the size of data generated in slowly changing processes and is not limited for the use in certain industries.
• IDR can be used for a variety of applications such as temperature (storage/cooling rooms for food, pharmaceuticals, residential and hotel buildings, archives), pressure (pneumatic control for security pollards, conveying systems), particulate matters (water quality control for industry, municipalities, healthcare authorities), gases (particulate matter monitoring for industry, municipalities, health authorities; gas detectors for test facilities and laboratories), weight (weight control for warehouse and transport logistics, waste management), energy (storage capacity monitoring for smart grid storage units and photovoltaic plants), and acceleration (rotation speed, traffic density – machinery monitoring and traffic control for warehouse technology, production and traffic).

The company Axtesys develops software that offers a broad range of services from sensor level to web interfaces , and from individual software to its own standardised products. The IDR software tool was successfully tested and improved with a research partner and implemented with a pilot client. It will be available from autumn 2019 onwards.
