In the current situation, CO2 regulations require new types of mobility. At the moment pure battery electric vehicles (BEV) are the answer to this question. But eMobility comes with some big challenges:

  • The battery increases the production costs immensely.
  • Increased productions costs lead to a high sales price, which reduces the access to mobility to a wide range of people and regions.
  • The charging infrastructure is very expansive and does still not cover the whole of Europe or even emerging markets.
  • Energy production is still far from being green.

The company OBRIST Powertrain GmbH's technology offers the possibility to reduce CO2 emissions radically and, with aFuel, even carbon negative mobility is possible. As a result of the reduced powertrain components, this system is still affordable for a broad range of people worldwide. As the energy production on board is based on liquid fuels, an extensive energy grid is not necessary. 

Furthermore, this powertrain can be used for start-ups and small original equipment manufacturers to provide a sustainable powertrain solution.

This powertrain can be used in a wide variety of use cases, from the automotive industry, through to the marine industry and up to energy saving applications for server farms, there is almost no limit for such an autonomous energy-generating machine.

OBRIST's powertrain is based on four innovative components:

  • The ZVG (Zero Vibration Generator) is a two-cylinder engine with a force and moment compensation until the second order. This means that this engine is vibration free. Additionally, the engine is thermally and acoustically insulated to avoid any interruptions to the electric driving behaviour and reduce cold starts for better emissions.
  • The battery has some intelligent features which reduce the costs and temperatures induced by battery issues, like thermal degradation.
  • The eDrive, as the only traction motor, is a highly efficient motor which performs all the acceleration and recuperation.
  • The  HyperHybrid control strategy is the reason that everything works hand in hand to reduce the fuel consumption to a minimum. This strategy is also responsible for the battery always maintaining a state of charge between 80% and 40% to reduce the risk of cycling aging.

This system is innovative because of the extraordinary harmony of its components and the optimisation of each component to make it cost-effective.

This system is optimally designed. OBRIST  does not rely on an existing component catalogue, which is why it is possible to design everything from scratch.

  • This powertrain is multifuel based and optimised for Methanol ( aFuel ) and gasoline.
  • The battery is reasonably sized : big enough to run the engine only in the best points, but small enough to reduce resources and costs.
  • The engine is completely vibration free and very quiet so the electric driving experience is not interrupted
  • All the dynamics are provided by the battery. The engine is not needed for acceleration.
  • Starting your engine when it is cold can be avoided completely because of the thermal insulation and the serial hybrid system, meaning the engine has time to preheat before the first combustion.
  • The Euro 7 is overfulfilled.
  • The system is very modular.
