sandTES - High temperature Thermal Energy Storage system with fluidized sand

Daniel Rottenberg

TTO, Patent & License Manager, TU Wien at TU Wien

Wien, AT - Österreich, Austria

About

The high-performant sandTES system is especially suited for the improvement of energy efficiency in renewable energy generation, industrial and residential energy systems, like by balancing out fluctuations of energy generation in concentrated solar power plants, enabling high load flexibility in thermal power plants, or harvesting off-heat sources in Heavy Industry. The Advanced Regenerator is an upgrade of the sandTES concept for the lower capacity range, for the exploitation of smaller off-heat sources and combined heat and power applications.

  • Low investment costs
  • Low operational costs
  • Widely available natural material without hazard issues
  • High specific heat capacity and density
  • Non-corrosive and stable over a very wide temperature range (100-800°C)

A pilot plant with 280 kWth for large applications as well as a prototype of the Advanced Regenerator for smaller exploitable off-heat sources are available at TU Wien. TU Wien is looking for Companies with exploitable off-heat sources, as well as Companies in Renewable and Thermal Energy Production and Public Utilities, that are interested in R&D cooperation and license agreements.
